De schepen zijn ongeveer twee maanden onderweg geweest om de kust van Gaza te bereiken, nadat ze vanuit Scandinavië zijn vertrokken, en stopten op hun route in verschillende havensteden in Europa.

As most of the participants and crew from AlAwda (The Return) are being deported from their unlawful detention at Givon prison in Israel, we now have a clearer picture of just how much violence was used by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) in their attack on the first Freedom Flotilla ship on Sunday. Some participants were repeatedly tasered, including in the head. Others were punched or had their head beaten against a wall by IOF soldiers. Zip-cuffs were used in a manner which cut off circulation. That any of this should happen to any civilian is an outrage. That the Israeli military would deliberately hurt a frail, 69 year old, slightly built surgeon and an Indigenous elder is even more outrageous.
The official IOF story of a ‘uneventful arrival’ is clearly false and masks a seriously disproportionate reaction: there was no need to deploy 12 military vessels with hundreds of armed soldiers against one unarmed former fishing boat full of peaceful participants committed to non-violence. At least two of our unlawfully detained participants began hunger strikes in prison to protest the way they were kidnapped at sea and the unhealthy conditions under which they are being held. Yes international response has been muted.
“There is a noticeable similarity with the capture of the Arctic Sunrise by Russian forces in 2013,” observes Phil Ball, British activist and climber who on board the Greenpeace vessel in 2013 and subsequently imprisoned in Russia for two months. “But in our case the international outcry led to some measure of justice. Here we have another unarmed civilian vessel, this time carrying medical supplies, which was aggressively boarded in international waters, and the world community isn’t upholding the same level of accountability.”
Of particular concern is the fate of the two Al Jazeera journalists from Al Awda, who are among the last still held in unlawful detention at Givon prison in Israel. They have had their professional equipment, documents, personal property and money stolen while held by Israeli forces. Press freedoms are under attack by the Israel authorities and require our international support, so we must all #DemandPressFreedom
Given that our next Flotilla vessel, the Swedish-flagged sailboat Freedom, is due to reach Gaza soon with more boxes of much-needed medical supplies (including #Gauze4Gaza), it is even more important to affirm the internationally recognized right to innocent passage on the high seas. We call on all national governments and international organizations to demand that Israeli forces respect the personal integrity of all on board the sailing vessel #Freedom and we #DemandPressFreedom for journalists on board, their equipment and their stories.
Just 300 miles from Gaza, Captain Turnbull expects a confrontation with Israeli military within hours of this interview, he has 12 people on board
DIMITRI LASCARIS: So, John, you are the captain of the Freedom, the second vessel that will approach Gaza. Could you tell us where you are in relation to Gaza currently, and just give us a sense of who is on the vessel. Who are these people, where did they come from, how many are they?
JOHN TURNBULL: Yes, we are currently about 300 miles, a little less, [inaudible] of Gaza, actually [inaudible] of Alexandria, because of the direction of the wind. There are, at the moment, twelve people on board, comprising two journalists, I think seven Swedish activists, myself, a Canadian, we have a Spaniard as well, and a Frenchman. We range in age from [inaudible], who is a Swedish, long-time activist. [Inaudible]. She is a very well-known activist and veterinarian from Sweden. [Inaudible]. And the youngest I am going to guess is another Swede, a young activist [inaudible] serving refugees in the refugee crisis in Greece and that region.
DIMITRI LASCARIS: Now, as I understand, you are all aware the Al Awda was intercepted on Sunday. That’s the lead vessel of the Freedom Flotilla. It was intercepted- hijacked, I think, would be a more accurate term- in international waters by the Israeli military. Two of the people who were on that vessel have been freed. The others apparently remain incarcerated in Israel, where they were taken against their will. One of those people, an Israeli human rights activist named Zohar Regev Chamberlain, and I know you know her well, has reported that despite the claims of the Israeli government that the intersection of the vessel occurred peacefully, soldiers actually struck and tasered members of the crew and some passengers. What do you anticipate is going to happen when you approach the territorial waters of Gaza, and what have you done to prepare for this?
JOHN TURNBULL: I have very little news about that. You know far more than I do. My anticipation is based not just on the little I know about Al Awda but also on what happened on previous expeditions. My anticipation is that the Israeli government will try very hard to make the Israeli navy look excellent. I won’t be surprised if this turns out not to be true.
DIMITRI LASCARIS: And what is, what is the mood on the vessel right now? How did it, how did the crew and passengers feel about their impending encounter with the Israeli military?
JOHN TURNBULL: Well, it may be odd to hear this, but I can tell you with confidence that we have passed what in the marathon business we call the 32nd mile, when your spirits are lowest and you wonder why you’re doing this, we have passed that point. And so we’re all very buoyant, both physically and spiritually. We really want to [inaudible] get as quickly as possible to Gaza, take our best shot at getting through to the port of Gaza. So we are in a very good mood. And we are determined to take our best chance to break through to the port of Gaza and demonstrate physically, emotionally, to the Palestinians that we will keep banging on their prison door until it is opened by Western governments cooperating diplomatically [inaudible] and the Israeli government.
DIMITRI LASCARIS: Well, John, we wish you and your fellow crew and passengers a swift and safe voyage to Gaza. And I hope that we’ll have the opportunity to talk to you again once you’ve arrived at your ultimate destination, whatever it may be, and are in a position to speak to us.

The statement made by the Israeli authorities that the Freedom Flotilla Coalition’s Al Awda boat was intercepted, boarded and redirected from Gaza, Palestine to Ashdod, Israel on 29 July without incident is false. According to first hand evidence that we have been given, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) violently attacked our Norwegian flagged boat ‘Al Awda’ (The Return) as she was in international waters.
Prior to all of our electronic communications being cut to and from our boat, at least four warships had appeared. Following some unlawful radio directives to our captain and our insistence that we had a right of innocent passage in international waters, armed, masked soldiers boarded ‘Al Awda’ without permission. They assaulted several unarmed participants by hitting them and using tasers as some of our participants lawfully endeavoured to resist this attempted hijacking, drawing upon two days of non-violence training in Palermo. Other participants were also hit by soldiers in this anything but peaceful exercise by the IOF, for what may have been a range of ‘reasons’.
Three of the many people that Israeli soldiers assaulted were: Captain Herman Reksten, Mike Treen and Dr Swee Ang. All of these assaults, including the hitting of an unarmed slightly built, 69 year old female surgeon crosses a line which must be investigated and the criminals must be held accountable. We continue to try and gain evidence and will seek to ensure that justice prevails.
Two Israeli citizens (Yonatan Shapira and Zohar Chamberlain Regev) and two international Al Jazeera journalists have been released, but 18 of the participants have now spent their second night unlawfully detained in Givon Prison, Israel. To protest Israel’s illegal actions and their ongoing treatment, two participants have commenced a hunger strike.
We urge the Norwegian Government, along with the national governments of all of those who were subjected to these multiple breaches of international law to intervene and to demand the immediate, unconditional release of Al Awda and everything that was on board, including all of the participants and the medical aid that we were carrying to MyCare in Gaza for distribution.

The motor vessel Al Awda (The Return), traveling in international waters towards Palestinian waters, 49 nautical miles from the port in Gaza City, has been contacted by the Israeli Occupation Forces navy and warned. The Israeli navy claims our ship is breaking international law and threatens that they will use “any measures necessary” to stop us. In fact, the only “necessary measures” would be to end the blockade of Gaza and restore freedom of movement for all Palestinians. At last news from on board, Al Awda maintains her course towards Gaza, where the crew and participants hope to arrive this evening around 21:00 local time.
A number of warships have appeared, so an attack, boarding and capture appear to be imminent, and we anticipate that all communications with the vessel will be lost shortly. Al Awda is sailing under a Norwegian flag, carrying 22 people and a cargo of medical supplies, including #Gauze4Gaza. There are people from 16 nations on board, including human rights supporters, journalists and crew, along with €13,000 worth of medical supplies. The boat itself, a former fishing vessel from Norway, is a gift to Palestinian fishers in Gaza.
Four boats left Scandinavia in mid-May and have since stopped in 28 ports building support for a ‘Just Future for Palestine’, that demands Israel end its ongoing breaches of international law and the twelve-year blockade of Gaza, thereby enabling the only closed port in the Mediterranean to open and for people to have their right to freedom of movement. Al Awda is being followed by the Swedish-flagged yacht Freedom, which is also carrying medical supplies along with people from a number of nations. We anticipate that it will reach a similar area where the IOF attacked Al Awda within the next two days. Two smaller sailing boats that travelled from Scandinavia and sailed through the canal system in Netherlands, Belgium and France visiting inland ports, participated in the mission until Palermo.
“The Freedom Flotilla Coalition calls on the Norwegian Government, the national governments of those aboard Al Awda and the Freedom, other national governments, and relevant international organizations to act immediately.” said Torstein Dahle of Ship to Gaza Norway, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. “The international community must assume its responsibilities and demand that Israeli authorities ensure the safety of those on board, the speedy delivery of our gifts to the Palestinian people in Gaza, an end to the illegal blockade of Gaza, and to stop impeding our legal right of innocent passage to Gaza to deliver our gift of much-needed medical supplies”.
Zohar Regev Chamberlain says the injustice she witnessed as a child in Israel moved her to defend Palestinian human rights
DIMITRI LASCARIS: This is Dimitri Lascaris, reporting for The Real News Network from Palermo, Sicily.
I’m here today with Zohar Regev Chamberlain. She’s an Israeli national and she is the representative for the Spanish campaign for the Freedom Flotilla. Thank you very much for joining us today.
ZOHAR REGEV CHAMBERLAIN: Thank you.
DIMITRI LASCARIS: So I understand you, you were born and raised in a kibbutz. And I’m curious to know about your evolution from, you know, a child growing up on the kibbutz to what you are today, which is a human rights activist for the Palestinian cause. Could you sort of explain that?
ZOHAR REGEV CHAMBERLAIN: Okay. The evolution is, you know, part of me growing up. And I can say that as a child, already I’ve encountered injustice in the treatment of Israelis towards Palestinians. And one of the incidents I remember is my own kibbutz being, very much pushing for a Palestinian family’s house to be demolished quite close to us, and my parents helping those people by bringing them a tent, and you know, just showing solidarity with them, and how my peers on the kibbutz reacted to that. So saying, like, why are you helping these people? They’re, you know, sort of like, coming in towards us. And you know, they are human beings that we’re building on their land. They don’t have a house. There were children my age, and I just felt, you know, this wasn’t right.
So this was, you know, part of my family history, always being a part of the demonstrations against the settlements. I remember in ’82, 1982 after the Sabra and Shatila massacre, part of that demonstration asking, you know, demanding that there will be an investigation, and a lot of similar actions they have participated in. So my family’s always been, like, a dissident family. And it wasn’t accepted, it was a little bit nonconformist. And for me it was natural to grow from that. And as the situation gets worse, become more of an activist, try to do something more.
DIMITRI LASCARIS: And ultimately you emigrated to Spain, where your feelings about the Palestinian cause and the way that Palestinian people were being treated, part of your motivation for leaving the country.
ZOHAR REGEV CHAMBERLAIN: Yes. I left in 2004. And this was after or during the Second Intifada, depending on how you look at it. But you know, I could see that Israelis were sort of, like, claiming their right to go to a cafe while the Palestinians were maybe using violence. But they were just resisting, you know, occupation that’s been going on for too long. And the frustration after the Oslo Accords never actually, were never implemented.
And the feeling that I had was that if you stay in that situation as an Israeli citizen, with all the privileges that a Jew in Israel has, you’re collaborating. You pay taxes, but you also just accept living normally in a situation that shouldn’t be accepted by anyone. So by moving away, I was just trying to keep my own sanity, keep the sensitivity towards the suffering. But actually, it’s, of course I feel as a human being that, you know, this injustice inflicted on the Palestinians is a problem. But as part of, you know, the group that’s oppressing them I feel a double obligation to do something about it, or to, you know, to try out.
I was raised with the, you know, history of the Holocaust, and saying how could the world be silent when we were, you know, being taken to the gas chambers. And I say, you know, you don’t have to go to the gas chambers. It’s enough when you dehumanize somebody that ultimately you’ll get there. So you need to cry out way before. And now when people criticize Israel they’re being blamed, being anti-Semites, or whatever. I just feel that it’s totally hypocritical against the way I was brought up.
DIMITRI LASCARIS: What’s your assessment of the state of the Zionist project, and your prediction, acknowledging it’s very difficult to predict the sorts of things, about the future of the Zionist project?
ZOHAR REGEV CHAMBERLAIN: I think, first of all, the work we do here as the Freedom Flotilla, direct action to try to challenge the blockade, is all about human rights. But I think the fact that Zionism has neglected to respect the human rights of the indigenous people, you, know, the original residents of Palestine, makes it impossible to create a safe place for Jews, which was the original reason for Zionism. So I think it’s doomed to fail, and I just hope that it wouldn’t cause too much suffering before it ends.
DIMITRI LASCARIS: Lastly, I’d like to talk to you about the country you currently reside in. Spain seems to be, in many ways, on the forefront of the battle for Palestinian rights within the European Union. A number of communities, I believe you’re from Cadiz, and Cadiz is an example of a community that has taken a strong stand in defense of Palestinian rights. I believe it may have actually expressed some support for sanctions, the boycott movement. Valencia, a very large city in Spain, has declared itself an apartheid-free zone, Barcelona. And other cities, of course.
So on a local level there appears to be very strong support, and burgeoning support for the Palestinian cause in Spain. However, the national government doesn’t seem to be particularly interested in taking concrete measures to protect the rights of the Palestinian people. How do you explain that disparity between the grassroots support and the policies of the national government?
ZOHAR REGEV CHAMBERLAIN: I don’t think Spain is so much different to other countries in this respect. I think Western democracies don’t really listen to their people. I think people in Spain generally support the Palestinian cause, or at least traditionally supported. I think with time Israeli propaganda has filtered. And it’s true that we have a big network of local government and civil society groups that support human rights, defend human rights through the BDS movement. And there’s a whole network of Israeli apartheid-free zones in Spain.
But it’s still to be seen whether they’ll be able to put pressure on the central government to actually sanction Israel, because Israel is not held accountable. If they don’t feel the consequences of their policies. I don’t think there will be an end to it. And I think it needs to come from international pressure. I don’t believe that Israeli society itself can bring this change from within.

De schepen van de Freedom Flotilla zijn nu aan hun laatste deel van de reis begonnen op weg naar de Gazastrook na vertrek vanuit meerdere Italiaanse havens. De meest prominente is de Al Awda, Arabisch voor ‘de terugkeer’, die uit de haven van Palermo vertrok.
De flotilla, georganiseerd door de internationale Freedom Flotilla Coalitie onder de slogan ‘Recht op een rechtvaardige toekomst voor Palestina’, heeft ongeveer 45 activisten en publieke figuren aan boord.
Zaher Birawi, voorzitter van het International Committee for Breaking Gaza Siege of Gaza, zei dat alle deelnemers aan boord van de vloot zeer bevlogen mensen zijn, die hopen Gaza te bereiken om een boodschap van vrede, liefde en toekomst aan de mensen te brengen.
Birawi benadrukte, volgens Al Ray, dat de deelnemers voorbereid zijn op het ergste scenario zoals het aanvallen en kapen van de schepen en het vasthouden van de opvarenden door Israëlische bezetting.
Hij voegde eraan toe dat de Freedom Flotilla Coalition voor alle deelnemers cursussen en sessies in geweldloos verzet en hoe om te gaan met een dergelijk scenario organiseerde.
Om hun veiligheid en terugkeer naar hun thuisland te garanderen wees Birawi erop dat zowel het comité van deelnemers als het juridisch comité alle documenten en procedures hebben voorbereid die nodig zijn voor geval de Israëlische bezetting de activisten vasthoudt aan boord van het vloot.
Daarnaast heeft het International Committee for Breaking Gaza Siege in samenwerking met de Palestijnse gemeenschap en solidariteitsorganisaties in een aantal Europese havens waaronder de Zweedse steden Malmö en Utoburi, meerdere maritieme solidariteitsactiviteiten georganiseerd ter ondersteuning van de schepen die de belegering van Gaza doorbreken.
Zoals eerder vermeld: de schepen van de Freedom Flotilla zijn op weg om de brute Israelische blokkade van de Gazastrook aan te vechten die nu zijn twaalfde jaar ingaat en om het internationale bewustzijn over de situatie te verhogen, eneinde regeringen overal ter wereld te bewegen zich in te zetten voor beëindiging van deze verlammende belegering.
